Tesla has posted an update video on the construction of its Semi factory near Giga Nevada.

The electric vehicle maker also shared the new logo of its Class 8 all-electric truck, which is pretty slick and classic Tesla at the same time.

Semi Factory Update

In the video, Tesla Semi program lead Dan Priestley stated that the last few months were spent building the factory shell of the facility, from its walls to its columns to its concrete floors. With the Semi factory shell completed, it is now time to equip the facility with the necessary equipment that would allow it to mass produce the Tesla Semi. The Tesla executive also shared the facility’s target output.

“This factory is designed with an annual capacity of 50,000 units a year. So over the next several quarters, we’re going to be industrializing the factory, installing the equipment, and preparing for high volume production. First units are set to be on the line by the end of this year, and we’ll be ramping the factory through 2026,” Priestley stated in the video.

The Tesla Semi is arguably Tesla’s most underrated product, with the vehicle operating in real-world fleets over the past years. As per Priestley, there are a lot of exciting things coming to the Semi factory and the Semi itself. These things, the Tesla executive noted, would prove that electric trucking is ready to scale.

New Tesla Semi Logo

The end of the Tesla Semi factory update video featured a logo for the vehicle that had not been shared by Tesla before. Similar to the Cybertruck, it appears that Tesla will be giving the Semi its own stylized logo. Unlike the Cybertruck’s graffiti print, however, the Class 8 all-electric truck’s logo features the word “Semi” written in a futuristic, thin font. Interestingly enough, the “E” in the word “Semi” was written with three horizontal lines, similar to the Tesla Model 3’s original logo.

Below is the Tesla Semi’s new logo.

The Tesla Semi may not be mass-produced yet today, but the electric vehicle maker sure seems extremely serious about ramping up its Semi-related operations in the coming months.

This was hinted at recently in Tesla’s Career Page, which lists a whopping 83 job listings related to the Tesla Semi program as of writing.

Tesla Semi Jobs

A look at Tesla’s Careers Page shows that the company has posted an impressive 83 jobs for the Semi program. The job listings are for several locations across the United States, from engineering-related roles in Palo Alto, California, to manufacturing-related roles in Sparks, Nevada, and vehicle service-related roles in Sacramento, California.

The late number of Semi-related jobs on Tesla’s Careers website suggests that efforts are now underway to grow the company’s team for the Class 8 all-electric truck. The Semi is arguably Tesla’s most underrated product, after all, having delivered its first units to a customer late 2022. Today, the Tesla Semi is being used in the field by customers like PepsiCo, but their numbers are still very limited.

Tesla Semi Factory

To enable the mass production of the Semi, Tesla has started the construction of a dedicated factory near Giga Nevada. Drone flyovers of the Semi factory site show that the facility is seeing steady progress. And during the Q4 and FY 2024 earnings call, VP for Vehicle Engineering Lars Moravy noted that the Semi is expected to see its first batch of meaningful production this 2025.

“The first builds of the (Tesla Semi’s) high volumes in design come late this year in 2025 and begin ramping early in 2026. But as we’ve said before, the Semi is a TCO no-brainer. I think it’s really similar to Optimus. It’s going to be set by how much people pay, and its total cost of ownership is much, much cheaper than any other transportation you could have. So, at that point, when we’re at scale, it will meaningfully contribute to Tesla’s revenue,” the Tesla executive noted.

A new proposal in the state of California would allow initial testing of self-driving heavy-duty trucks, as Tesla and others aim to bring their driverless technologies to market with Class 8 trucks and other large vehicles.

On Friday, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) said that it’s proposing self-driving vehicle tests be allowed on public roads for heavy-duty trucks and other large vehicles, as detailed in a report from Reuters. The news comes as heavy-duty vehicles about 10,001 pounds are currently unable to utilize public self-driving tests in California, as well as others such as Texas, Arizona, and Arkansas.

The proposal would restrict autonomous testing for semi-trucks and other oversized vehicles to specified, pre-selected routes that would be pre-determined to be legal for size, weight, and loading requirements. It would also ban testing these vehicles on city streets, with selected routes primarily including major highways.

The state would also prohibit testing of specific heavy-duty vehicles until further notice under the proposal, including household movers, commercial vehicles used to transport passengers, oversize loads, bulk liquids, or hazardous materials.

READ MORE ON SELF-DRIVING FOR HEAVY-DUTY TRUCKS:

The DMV plans to hold a public hearing on the proposal on June 10, after which point it would be allowed to move forward with the agency.

California has been preparing regulations for autonomous trucking since at least last August, when the state submitted an initial draft for such a legal framework.

The state is also evaluating whether light-duty vehicle testing requirements should be updated. Currently, the state requires a permit to test self-driving vehicles utilizing a safety driver, before applying for subsequent phases of driverless testing and deployment permits.

To apply for driverless testing permits, manufacturers are required to conduct testing for a minimum of 50,000 miles, while heavy-duty manufacturers would be required to complete at least 500,000 autonomous testing miles under the proposal. Of them, up to 40,000 of the miles are allowed to be completed outside of California.

The news also follows the Trump administration’s aims to accelerate self-driving deployment this week through the expansion of exemptions for certain reporting requirements.

Although Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) is not currently available for the company’s electric Semi, it’s expected to become available at some point in the future. Tesla has also been spotted testing its FSD on the Semi in and around Giga Nevada, ahead of the company’s plans to launch the software on the Class 8 truck.

Tesla is currently aiming to ramp up production of the Semi, and it’s constructing an expansion to its Gigafactory in Nevada to eventually scale up to volume production.

Among the several companies that have had the opportunity to add Tesla Semi all-electric Class 8 trucks to their fleets earlier than others, the most notable is arguably Frito-Lay, which has utilized the vehicle for a couple of years now.

However, as their fleet is making more local runs and there are undoubtedly plans to expand to more Semi units, the company has recognized it needs additional Megachargers to give juice to their trucks.

As a result, Frit-Lay decided to build more chargers at their Bakersfield, California facility, according to new permits filed by Tesla:

There are already chargers at the company’s Modesto, California, factory, but Bakersfield is roughly three hours south of Modesto.

Interestingly, Tesla is calling the chargers “Semi Chargers” in the filing, potentially hinting that it is no longer referring to them as “Megachargers,” as they have been in the past. This is a relatively minor detail, but it is worth taking note of.

In 2022, Frito-Lay began installing these chargers in preparation for the Semi to become one of the company’s main logistics tools for deliveries in California and surrounding states.

Frito-Lay is not the only company that has chosen to utilize the Tesla Semi for these early “pilot” runs. PepsiCo has also been a company that has used the Semi very publicly over the past two years.

Additionally, the Tesla Semi participated in the Run on Less EV trucking study back in late 2023, where it managed to complete a 1,000-mile run in a single day:

Tesla Semi logs 1,000-mile day in Run on Less EV trucking study

Tesla is planning to ramp production of the Semi late this year. On the Q4 2024 Earnings Call, VP of Vehicle Engineering Lars Moravy said the company would be focusing on the first builds of the Semi’s high-volume design late this year before ramping production in the early portion of 2026:

“We just closed out the Semi factory roof and walls last week in Reno, a schedule which is great with the weather. In Reno, you never know what’s going to happen. But we’re prepping for mechanical installation of all the equipment in the coming months. The first builds of the high-volume Semi design will come late this year in 2025 and begin ramping early in 2026.”

Tesla will build these units at a new Semi production facility located in Reno near its Gigafactory. The company is getting closer to finishing construction, as a drone video from this morning showed the facility is coming along at a good pace:

Tesla reportedly suspended Cybercab and Semi parts order amid tariff war: Reuters https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-reportedly-suspended-cybercab-and-semi-parts-order-amid-tariff-war-reuters/ https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-reportedly-suspended-cybercab-and-semi-parts-order-amid-tariff-war-reuters/#respond Wed, 16 Apr 2025 19:32:44 +0000 https://www.teslarati.com/?p=288118 A new report claims Tesla is suspending the order of some parts for the Cybercab and Semi from China due to tariffs.

The post Tesla reportedly suspended Cybercab and Semi parts order amid tariff war: Reuters appeared first on TESLARATI.

]]>
In a new report that cites people with “direct knowledge,” Tesla has apparently suspended a parts order for both the Cybercab and Semi that was set to come from China as a result of the tariff war between the country and the U.S.

Reuters reported this morning that the move was made as the 34 percent tariff on Chinese goods was raised to 145 percent. The report states that Tesla was “ready to absorb the additional costs when Trump imposed the 34 percent tariff on Chinese goods, but could not do so when the tariff went beyond that.”

This left Tesla in a situation where it had to make a decision, and ultimately chose to suspend shipping plans as a result.

Tesla, nor its CEO, Elon Musk, has responded to the report, so it is not known whether it has been confirmed. Tesla does not have a dedicated press relations division.

However, if it is true, Tesla would likely feel some repercussions from the parts delay for Cybercab, which it planned to launch in June with the start of a robotaxi ride-hailing platform in the City of Austin.

It is worth mentioning that this will not derail the plans completely, as the Model 3 and Model Y were also targeted to be a part of this initial rollout.

As far as the Semi, volume production is set to begin in early 2026. The first builds of the Semi’s high-volume design are slated to roll off production lines in Nevada late this year.

First Tesla Semi high-volume production builds expected this 2025

Tesla has responded to the tariffs in several ways, including halting the delivery of its Model S and Model X vehicles in China as the country imposed a 125 percent tariff as a retaliation against the United States.

It is no secret that Tesla is being impacted by the tariff situation, and Musk has been transparent about that. However, it is unknown whether it will begin to impact the company’s future projects, like the Semi and Cybercab.

A recent report has suggested that Nikola Motor, a hydrogen-electric truck maker that once sued Tesla over the Semi’s allegedly copied design, is closing in on bankruptcy.

The information was initially shared in an article from The Wall Street Journal.

The report:

  • Citing people reportedly familiar with the matter, the WSJ noted that Nikola has been working with law firm Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman to explore options.
  • These may reportedly include a sale or a restructuring in bankruptcy.
  • A Nikola representative has stated that the company is still assessing its financial position and liquidity needs.
  • The representative also noted that the company is evaluating several options, such as financing as part of a financial restructuring effort.

Nikola’s rise and fall:

  • Nikola was once considered a serious contender in the sustainable long-haul market.
  • So notable was Nikola’s presence that the company even accused Tesla of copying the design of its Nikola One prototype with the Semi.
  • Nikola went public in 2020, even before it sold a single truck.
  • Things started to fall apart when a report from Hindenburg Research accused Nikola and its then-CEO, Trevor Milton, of misrepresenting investors about the company’s technology.
  • Milton was eventually convicted of fraud in 2022. He is currently appealing his conviction.
  • Milton would leave Nikola due to the controversy, and the company would eventually release the Nikola Tre under new management.
  • As per Nikola’s latest earnings report for the quarter ended in September, it was able to produce more than 80 trucks at a net loss of almost $200 million.

The Tesla Semi is still on track to start its production this 2025.

This suggests that Tesla’s Class 8 all-electric truck could become a more common sight on public roads soon.

The Tesla Semi program:

  • The Tesla Semi was unveiled alongside the next-generation Roadster back in late 2017.
  • The vehicle held its first delivery event in December 2022.
  • Since then, the Semi has been delivered only to very few customers.
  • Tesla, however, has started building a dedicated Semi factory in Nevada that is designed to mass produce the Class 8 all-electric truck.
  • The Tesla Semi factory is expected to produce 50,000 units of the vehicle per year.

Q4 2024 earnings call update:

  • During the Q4 2024 earnings call, Tesla was asked about the progress of the Semi program.
  • The inquiry was addressed by Tesla Vice President of Vehicle Engineering Lars Moravy.
  • As per Moravy, the first builds of the Semi’s high-volume design will come late this year before ramping early in 2026.
  • “We just closed out the Semi factory roof and walls last week in Reno, a schedule which is great with the weather. In Reno, you never know what’s going to happen. But we’re prepping for mechanical installation of all the equipment in the coming months. The first builds of the high-volume Semi design will come late this year in 2025 and begin ramping early in 2026,” Moravy noted

The Tesla Semi’s potential:

  • Moravy also highlighted that the Tesla Semi would be a no-brainer for operators.
  • “The Semi is a TCO no-brainer. I think it’s really similar to Optimus. It’s going to be set by how much people pay, and its total cost of ownership is much, much cheaper than any other transportation you could have. So, at that point, when we’re at scale, it will meaningfully contribute to Tesla’s revenue,” Moravy said.
  • Tesla CEO Elon Musk also emphasized that the Semi’s autonomous driving capabilities would provide a big selling point for the Class 8 all-electric truck.
  • “I do think that Tesla Semi, again with autonomy, is going to be incredibly valuable,” Musk said.

Tesla’s Semi factory expansion continues to make construction progress, with recent drone footage from the site showing that the walls are now complete.

The exterior walls at the Gigafactory Nevada Semi expansion are officially up, as shared in a video update from Semi factory drone observer Zanegler on Saturday. The video shows substantial progress from updates a few weeks ago, when Tesla began installing windows and walls en masse.

Zanegler also says that the company still had a long way to go regarding the remaining walls as of last Sunday, though he did expect them to be fully completed soon. He also notes that, while the roof still isn’t quite completed, some of the final materials can now be seen on the roof, suggesting that it could be completed in the coming weeks.

Along with the full building exterior getting completed walls in recent weeks, crews continue to work on the future stamping pit areas, and Zanegler also highlights speculation in recent weeks that Tesla could be planning to build its upcoming Robovan at the Giga Semi expansion. You can see Zanegler’s full video from over the weekend below.

It’s now been over a year since Tesla initially broke ground on the Tesla Semi factory, and the company is aiming to launch production at the plant sometime in 2025. The first full exterior corner was completed in late October,

Upon reaching volume production, the Nevada Semi factory is expected to build 50,000 units annually, with early external deliveries from the plant aiming to go out early next year.

Some of Tesla’s early Semi units have already gone out in the past few years to a few companies as part of pilot programs, starting with a delivery to PepsiCo in 2022. The automaker also has deals in place with Walmart, DHL, Martin Brower, and others, and early results from the testing periods largely showing positive results.

Tesla also displayed the Semi at the IAA conference in Münich, Germany in September and at its Gigafactory outside of Berlin a month prior, and Elon Musk has previously said that the vehicle will eventually be produced at Giga Berlin.

Tesla has been snubbed for the second time by the Biden Administration for funding that would help build out an electric vehicle charging corridor on the West Coast for EV semi-trucks.

It is the second time the Biden White House has denied Tesla funding for the corridor, a project it is working on with California’s South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD).

In total, 49 applicants won $636 million from the Department of Transportation in this round of funding requests. Tesla was not on the list of recipients, and the SCAQMD confirmed to TechCrunch that the two companies had once again applied for funding during this round.

Tesla requested funding from the government in 2023 as a part of the Charging and Fueling Infrastructure (CFI) program, which was part of the Biden Administration’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal that was signed in 2021.

In 2024, the first request from Tesla and SCAQMD was denied.

After the creation of the CFI, Tesla developed plans to build an EV charging corridor spanning from Fremont in Northern California, all the way to Laredo, Texas, which falls in the southern portion of the state right on the border of Mexico.

Nine total stops were projected to be created on this corridor, including Fremont, CA, Bakersfield, CA, Compton, CA, Indio, CA, Phoenix, AZ, San Simon, AZ, Sparks, TX, Fort Stockton, TX, and Laredo, TX.

It is unlikely this is the final round of funding for the entire CFI, as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law set aside $2.5 billion for EV charging expansion.

With President-elect Donald Trump set to take office in just one week, it seems clear that perhaps some of the funding could go in the direction of Tesla, especially given his relationship with CEO Elon Musk.

Tesla is continuing to make progress on its Gigafactory Nevada expansion for the electric Semi, with a video update from over the weekend showing the initial foundation for the site’s stamping area along with more work on the walls.

In a drone video taken by Tesla Semi factory construction observer Zanegler on Saturday morning, we can see the first concrete wall foundations being poured at the Southwest corner of the construction site, where the plant’s stamping facility will be located upon completion. Viewers can also see the company’s recent progress on the walls and windows, as well as a roof that’s now over halfway complete, after having been worked on significantly over the past few months.

You can also see a few angles of the site’s main entrance, where Zanegler and others have speculated that Tesla may be building a Robovan-shaped easter egg, or one shaped like the Semi with a trailer attached. In any case, the shape on the Giga Nevada Semi expansion led to widespread discussion about whether or not Tesla could someday build the Robovan at this facility.

The video also includes a drone flight around the entire Giga Nevada facility, showing many of the walls and windows having been completed as the company gets closer to wrapping up exterior work.

TESLA SEMI FACTORY CONSTRUCTION IN OCTOBER: Tesla Semi factory expansion gets its first full corner

Tesla’s Giga Nevada Semi expansion

Tesla first broke ground on the Semi factory expansion last January, and the company is aiming to eventually reach a volume production of 50,000 Semi units per year at the site. Production is expected to begin later this year, while some of the company’s first external deliveries from the new Semi factory are targeting early 2026.

Although Tesla is still constructing the Semi factory, it has already produced the electric Class 8 truck at low volumes and started to deploy units to a handful of companies. After being highly anticipated for years since its unveil, the Semi’s first deliveries began in 2022 to PepsiCo, though the automaker has since expanded its reach to include other companies such as DHL, Walmart, Martin Brower, and, more recently, Saia Inc.

Early trials of the Semi have championed impressive range and comfort results, with Saia Executive VP of Operations Patrick Sugar sharing initial experiences at the company last month:

We were very impressed with the Tesla Semi as it demonstrated an ability to handle both local and longer haul applications while still delivering notable power and efficiency. During a demonstration earlier this year, we achieved 1.73 kWh per mile.

Our drivers were equally impressed, noting the smooth acceleration, comfortable design, and its ability to maintain speeds on steep inclines, even while hauling heavy payloads.
