T-Mobile cut the price of its Starlink cellular service to $10 per month as it gears up for a July launch and aims to broaden access. The carrier also seeks FCC approval to extend Starlink cellular service to legacy devices, citing life-saving potential.

“After gauging the incredible response from customers—including broader than expected interest from competitor’s customers—we’ve set our final launch pricing for T-Satellite at just $10 a month,” T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert said during a Thursday earnings call.

The $10 price applies to T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon customers. Non-T-Mobile users can access the service via a downloadable eSIM. “This gen one pricing will be good for at least a year,” Sievert added.

Initially, T-Mobile announced during a Super Bowl ad that the Starlink beta service would be free for its highest-tier plan until year-end. Other T-Mobile users would pay $15 monthly, while customers from other carriers would be charged $20.

An early adopter discount briefly offered T-Mobile users a $10 rate. The new universal $10 pricing reflects T-Mobile’s aggressive push to outpace AT&T and Verizon, which are developing satellite services with partners like AST SpaceMobile.

Starlink Cellular service, powered by over 560 satellites, functions as an orbiting cell tower, enabling text-based messaging in rural and remote areas. Data downloads and voice calls may follow later this year.

T-Mobile’s filing with the Federal Communications Commission requests expanded access for legacy devices, arguing that current rules limiting service to newer phones exclude many users. The carrier emphasized that broader access could enhance connectivity in critical situations.

T-Mobile’s price cut and FCC push signal a strategic effort to dominate the satellite connectivity market. By leveraging SpaceX’s Starlink constellation, the carrier aims to deliver affordable, widespread service while addressing regulatory hurdles. The move could reshape how rural users access mobile networks, especially as competitors ramp up their satellite offerings. With the July launch approaching, T-Mobile’s focus on affordability and inclusivity positions it as a key player in the evolving satellite communication landscape.

T-Mobile targets Starlink services for older phones https://www.teslarati.com/t-mobile-starlink-phone-services-legacy-device/ https://www.teslarati.com/t-mobile-starlink-phone-services-legacy-device/#respond Fri, 11 Apr 2025 13:01:01 +0000 https://www.teslarati.com/?p=287810 T-Mobile wants FCC approval to expand its Starlink-powered satellite service to legacy devices. The carrier says lives could depend on it.

T-Mobile is pushing for Starlink satellite messaging on legacy phones.

The carrier filed a request with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to broaden its Starlink-powered satellite messaging service to older smartphones, seeking to sidestep a paperwork snag that limits access. T-Mobile argues the move would bring potentially life-saving connectivity to more users. Current FCC rules exclude “legacy devices” from accessing T-Mobile’s Starlink phone services.

T-Mobile’s filing notes: “Pursuant to the rules, consumers cannot take advantage of the new potentially life-saving service unless the manufacturer of the equipment they already own and operate seeks modified equipment authorization.” It adds, “Worse, consumers have no ability to cause manufacturers to update their equipment authorizations – an inability with potentially severe consequences in the midst of an emergency when they need SCS [supplemental coverage from space] connectivity most.”

The carrier stressed public interest, stating, “Requiring terrestrial operators or their SCS partners to block access to SCS service on a device-by-device basis due not to a technical issue, but to a paperwork requirement, is also contrary to the public interest.”

T-Mobile’s off-the-grid phone services are powered by 555 Starlink satellites and target unmodified smartphones. With Americans swapping phones every three years, per industry trends, the rule change’s reach is uncertain. The future of T-Mobile’s Starlink phone services becomes even more uncertain when considering new devices like the iPhone 16 offer built-in satellite features. Still, T-Mobile’s bid aligns with a buzzing phone-to-satellite sector, where rivals like AT&T are also eyeing space-based solutions.

A T-Mobile rep told Light Reading, “The goal with T-Mobile Starlink has always been to have it work on phones people already own so they don’t have to go out and buy brand new devices.”

Phones eligible for T-Mobile’s Starlink phone services include the following:

  • Apple iPhone 14 and later (including Plus, Pro, Pro Max, & e models)
  • Google Pixel 9 (including Pro, Pro Fold, & Pro XL models)
  • Motorola 2024 and later (including razr, razr+, edge, and the g series)
  • Samsung Galaxy A14, A15, A16, A35, A53, A54
  • Samsung Galaxy S21 and later (including Plus, Ultra, and Fan Edition models)
  • Samsung Galaxy X Cover6 Pro
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 and later
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 and later
  • T-Mobile REVVL 7 (including the Pro models)

T-Mobile Starlink Beta was officially announced in an ad played during Super Bowl LIX. The Beta program is open to everyone, including Verizon and AT&T customers. Anyone interested in joining the T-Mobile Starlink Beta program may register for free access until July 2025.

“T-Mobile Starlink is the first and only space-based mobile network in the US that automatically connects to your phone so you can be connected even where no cellular network reaches. It’s a massive technical achievement and an absolute game-changer for ALL wireless users.

“We’re still in the early days — I don’t want to overhype the experience during a beta test — but we’re officially putting ‘no bars’ on notice. Dead zones, your days are numbered at the Un-carrier,” commented Mike Sievert, the President and CEO of T-Mobile.

T-Mobile Starlink Beta Registration

T-Mobile Starlink will officially launch in July. The Beta program allows T-Mobile and Starlink to test their Direct-to-Cellular services until the launch.

During the beta period, T-Mobile has decided to open the service to Verizon and AT&T customers, allowing them to test T-Mobile Starlink’s text messaging for free. Once T-Mobile Starlink is officially launched in July, the service will cost $20/month per line for Verizon and AT&T users.

The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) granted permission for SpaceX and T-Mobile to operate Starlink Direct-to-Cellular (aka Starlink Cellular) over areas in Hurricane Milton’s projected path.

SpaceX and T-Mobile asked for a second Special Temporary Authority (STA) from the FCC to extend Starlink Cellular’s services over areas that could be be by Hurricane Milton. Starlik Direct-to-Cellular already received permission to operate in areas hit by Hurricane Helene.

Starlink Cellular will provide wireless emergency alerts and SMS to areas within Hurricane Milton’s projected path. SpaceX and T-Mobile cellular services will also enable people to text 911.

“Late last week the teams at T-Mobile and Starlink asked for and received Special Temporary Authority (STA) from the FCC to operate our T-Mobile Starlink Direct-to-Cellular service over parts of North Carolina affected by Hurricane Helene. T-Mobile and Starlink have once again asked for and received STA from the FCC to do the same for areas in Florida affected by Hurricane Milton.

“In these areas, Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) are on and the teams have enabled basic texting (SMS), including the ability to text 911. While SpaceX’s direct-to-cell constellation has not been fully deployed, this early test version could provide vital support as teams work to get infrastructure and services back online and help first responders with rescue efforts,” noted T-Mobile.

Hurricane Milton picked up strength as it approached Florida, making it a Category 5 hurricane with winds of 160 mph. It is expected to weaken before hitting Florida but double in size, meaning it will impact a larger area. Hurricane Milton is expected to hit Florida’s Central Gulf Coast on Wednesday, October 9. Its eye and eyeball may hit the Tampa area.

A few locals have reported seeing floods before Milton’s arrival. Local authorities are encouraging people to evacuate while they still can.

SpaceX and T-Mobile temporarily deployed Starlink Direct-to-Cellular (aka Starlink Cellular) to help Hurricane Helene recovery efforts in affected areas.

The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) granted SpaceX and T-Mobile temporary authority to provide coverage through Starlink Direct-to-Cellular to cellphones in areas affected by the devastating category 4 hurricane.

“The satellites have already been enabled and started broadcasting emergency alerts to cell phones on all networks in North Carolina. In addition, we may test basic texting (SMS) capabilities for most cell phones on the T-Mobile network in North Carolina. SpaceX’s direct-to-cell constellation has not been fully deployed, so all services will be delivered on a best-effort basis,” announced SpaceX in an X post.

Hurricane Helene hit several states, including North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. North Carolina was hit the hardest, with 116 deaths reported from the state out of the 232 people that have been verified as deceased across all the states that were hit by the hurricane.

“While SpaceX’s direct-to-cell constellation has not been fully deployed, we felt that getting even this early test version into the hands of people on the ground could provide vital support as teams work to get infrastructure and services back online and help first responders with rescue efforts,” said T-Mobile in a press release

In an interview with Jim Cramer, the cellular provider’s CEO Mike Sievert noted that SpaceX has 192 cellular Starlink satellites in Earth’s orbit. Starlink Cellular reportedly needs around 300 to offer complete services in the United States. Sievert estimated that Starlink Direct-to-Cellular beta tests could start by the end of the year or early 2025. However, some T-Mobile customers reportedly received access to Starlink Cellular briefly late last month, suggesting that SpaceX and the service provider have started some testing.

According to Elon Musk, SpaceX has decided to offer Starlink Direct-to-Cellular emergency service access for free worldwide, subject to government approval. Using Starlink Cellular in North Carolina would demonstrate the emergency service’s capabilities in the future.

SpaceX & T-Mobile reportedly started testing for their upcoming Starlink cellular satellite service.

Recently, a few people claimed SpaceX and T-Mobile were testing their Starlink cellular satellite service. The service is commonly called Starlink Cellular or Starlink Direct-to-Cell.

The speculations about Starlink Cellular’s tests started after Reddit user u/ommmyyyy posted about a perplexing change in their iPhone 14’s status bar.

“Satellite appeared on my iPhone 14 status bar today instead of T-Mobile; this was in Madison, Wisconsin, by the way,” said the Reddit user in the post.

A few Redditors replied to u/ommmyyyy’s post, and most of them can be split into two big camps. One side argued that “Satellite” refers to Apple’s Emergency SOS feature, which is available on iPhone 14 units and later. However, a few Apple iPhone users quickly refuted the theory.

“You can tell who in this thread is an Android user by those who keep claiming this is Apple’s system.

“This is not what the Apple Satellite system looks like when in use, by the way. Easiest way to tell: Apple’s system has a satellite icon instead of the LTE symbol. Additionally, when used, it will have a green or orange dot on the Dynamic Island. You have to actively connect to it with a whole UI that tells you where to point your phone; it’s not automatic and can’t just happen by accident,” commented Reddit user Lancaster61.

The other camp believes that SpaceX and T-Mobile are running tests for Starlink Cellular.

“This is definitely Starlink and T-Mobile playing around as more upgraded Starlink satellites get launched. To my knowledge, they actually deployed another batch the other day,” said u/Bob_A_Feets.

The Cybertruck Guy account, over on X, seemed to encounter the same scenario as u/ommmyyyy on his iPhone. The X account holder successfully sent and received texts while in a moving car through the “Satellite” service. The Cybertruck Guy linked the service with SpaceX and T-Mobile Starlink Cellular service.

In a recent interview, T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert told Jim Cramer that Starlink’s direct-to-cell beta program would probably launch between late 2024 and early 2025

Starlink Cellular was initially expected to launch by fall 2024. However, Seivert stated that SpaceX has only 192 cellular satellites in Earth’s orbit.

Starlink Cellular reportedly needs around 300 satellites to offer services in the United States. Last week, SpaceX COO Gwynn Shotwell told the Texas House of Representatives that the aerospace company plans to launch 100 missions to put more Starlink satellites in orbit

T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert recently estimated that Starlink Cellular beta (aka Starlink Direct-to-Cell) could launch between late 2024 and early 2025.

“We think we’re on track for a beta program of the direct-satellite-to-cellular program that we announced a while back—it could start this year or early into next year,” Sievert told Jim Cramer.

SpaceX’s Starlink Directo-to-Cell website states that text services will be available starting in 2024. It estimates that Voice & Data and IoT will be available by 2025.

Before Sievert’s interview with Cramer, Starlink Cellular was expected to launch with T-Mobile in the fall of 2024. Elon Musk has shared that Starlink Cellular will be exclusive to T-Mobile in its first year. SpaceX will consider working with other networks in the United States as Starlink Direct-to-Cell develops. It hopes to also partner with at least one network in different countries.

For now, however, SpaceX still has a few hurdles to overcome before considering expansion. According to Seivert, SpaceX has 192 cellular satellites in Earth’s orbit. Starlink Direct-to-Cell reportedly needs around 300 cellular satellites to offer services in the United States. Only time will tell if SpaceX can reach its preferred number of cellular satellites before the end of the year to launch Starlink Direct-to-Cell.

In additiona, SpaceX must wait for clearance from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) before offering Starlink Cellular to customers in the United States. The aerospace company is also waiting for the FCC to approve its request to operate Starlink Cellular above normal radio frequency limits to boost real-time video and voice calls.

Its request may not delay Starlink Direct-to-Cell’s beta launch. SpaceX may launch text capabilities with Starlink Cellular beta once it receives clearance from the FCC. Then, it could decided to roll out other capabilities over time.

Elon Musk recently shared more details about Starlink Cellular or Starlink direct-to-mobile phone internet services. He explained that SpaceX would work exclusively with T-Mobile for the first year of Starlink Cellular.

Musk added that Starlink will work with other carriers after its first year. SpaceX aims to work with at least one carrier in each country. Its ultimate goal is to work with all carriers.

In 2022, T-Mobile and SpaceX’s Starlink satellites announced a technology alliance called Coverage Above and Beyond. The collaboration’s primary goal is to end dead zones. Musk recently reaffirmed the partnership’s goals.

“After thinking it through, SpaceX Starlink will provide emergency service access to mobile phone(s) for people in distress for free. This applies worldwide, subject to approval by country governments,” Musk said on X.

T-Mobile and SpaceX expect to launch Starlink Cellular by fall 2024.

In June 2024, SpaceX filed a waiver with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), requesting permission for Starlink Cellular to operate beyond normal radio frequency parameters. T-Mobile’s competitors AT&T and Verizon opposed SpaceX’s request with the FCC

SpaceX fired back at AT&T and Verizon’s recent claims about Starlink Cellular.

“While the petitions from AT&T, Verizon, Dish/EchoStar, and Omnispace lack technical basis or legal merit, their game is clear. AT&T and Verizon seek to hamstring their competitor T-Mobile by talking out of both sides of their mouths, on one hand demanding without technical support that T-Mobile and SpaceX operate at unnecessarily low power levels that will force Americans to sacrifice service while giving their own partner AST a free pass,” wrote SpaceX in a recent letter to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

SpaceX and T-Mobile announced their partnership in 2022 with the goal to end mobile dead zones. The partners are expected to launch Starlink Cellular in the fall of 2024.

In June 2024, SpaceX filed for a waiver requesting the FCC to allow Starlink Cellular to operate beyond normal radio frequency parameters. AT&T and Verizon sent letters telling the FCC to reject SpaceX’s plans for Starlink Cellular at the beginning of August.

AT&T and Verizon claimed that SpaceX’s Starlink Cellular would generate too much radio interference if it is allowed to operate beyond normal parameters. AT&T reportedly analyzed SpaceX’s Starlink satellites. The study suggested Starlink satellites would “cause an 18% average reduction in network downlink throughput” if allowed to operate beyond normal radio frequency parameters.

SpaceX calls out AT&T’s analysis results in its letter, pointing out that its competitor has refused to show the study’s data to the Commission. SpaceX also emphasizes that AT&T and Verizon have partnered with Starlink competitor AST SpaceMobile. T-Mobile also wrote a letter to the FCC claiming that AT&T’s technical analysis is flawed.

“AT&T goes so far as to claim to have conducted a secret study it refuses to show the Commission to support suppressing SpaceX’s out-of-band emissions to an interference-protection level ten times below the limit sufficient to protect terrestrial networks while allowing its partner AST to exceed that limit,” wrote SpaceX.

PCMag first posted SpaceX’s response letter. Read it below.

SpaceX filed a request with the Federal Communications Commission to put payloads on 2,016 of its satellites for its direct-to-cell system with T-Mobile. In August, SpaceX and T-Mobile announced a partnership to end mobile dead zones by connecting T-Mobile phones with Starlink in late 2023.

In the documents shared by CNBC’s Micheal Sheetz, SpaceX said that its direct-to-cellular system would consist of a German-licensed hosted payload flown on a subset of 2,016 of its Gen 2 non-geostationary orbit (NGSO).

SpaceX will deploy the system on up to 72 satellites per plane and noted this os of the 120 satellites per plane in the amended Gen2 System Orbital Parameters. It will also deploy them on up to a total of 28 planes at 53 and 43-degree inclinations. In total, there will be a range of 80-100 satellites serving the U.S. and its territories.

Once fully deployed, SpaceX will be able to provide full and continuous coverage of the earth within +58 degrees to -58 degrees latitude by the middle of 2024. SpaceX noted that the direct-to-cellular system will use advanced phased array beam-forming and digital process technology onboard each satellite payload.

This will enable the service to efficiently use spectrum resources and provide voice, messaging, and basic web browsing at “theoretical peak speeds of up to either 3.0 Mbps or 7.2 Mbps peak upload.”

The filings also reveal a key reason behind SpaceX’s purchase of Swarm. SpaceX purchased Swarm, which had been building a constellation of 150 satellites, in 2021. SpaceX said that it is seeking to leverage its existing space resources to provide an “even more ubiquitous connectivity option” for Americans.

It has a goal of “global affordable connectivity” that includes the proposed direct-to-cellular system for LTE devices such as cell phones “which follows SpaceX’s expansion into the mobile services arena with its acquisition of Swarm Technologies, Inc. (Swarm), a company authorized to deploy and operate 150 small NGSO satellites designed to provide narrowband services in the 137-138 MHZ and 1480150.5 very-high frequency Mobile Satellite Service bands.”

SpaceX also added that Swarm had already launched most of its authorized satellites and is offering services to customers in various sectors such as transportation, maritime, and energy.

“The combination of direct-to-cellular and the Swarm IoT connectivity solutions truly encompass all ranges of data rates and power levels for devices around the world,” the filing stated.
