Starbase is on the cusp of becoming the nation’s newest municipality. Local voters are casting ballots and deciding whether to incorporate the Starbase community. The voting process, which runs until May 3, 2025, could transform the unincorporated area into a space-age city.

Starbase is located in Cameron County’s Rio Grande Valley, 25 miles east of Brownsville, Texas. It is home to SpaceX’s Starship facility and houses fewer than 300 residents, including 120 children.

Elon Musk relocated SpaceX’s headquarters from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase in 2024, envisioning a futuristic town for his workforce. Musk pitched the concept of a space-age city four years ago and has repeatedly talked about it over the years.

The proposed Starbase city would span 1.5 square miles—roughly the size of New York’s Central Park. It would potentially house 3,500 SpaceX employees. A petition filed earlier this year triggered the vote to establish Starbase as a Type C municipality. SpaceX believes Starbase needs to be incorporated to support its mission to travel to Mars.

The vote is expected to pass, with 90% of the 279 eligible voters expected to favor establishing a Starbase city. Voters will also select a mayor and two commissioners for the new city. Bobby Peden is currently the only candidate for Mayor of Starbase. Meanwhile, Jordan Buss and Jenna Petrzelka are running for commissioner.

Starbase’s incorporation would mark a bold step in Musk’s vision, creating a hub tailored to SpaceX’s Mars ambitions. As voting continues, the outcome could redefine the Rio Grande Valley, establishing a unique, company-driven municipality centered on space exploration.

SpaceX successfully launched and landed its Super Heavy booster and Starship on its fourth integrated flight test, with each making a soft splashdown in the water.

Starship took to the skies at 7:50 am CT from a foggy Starbase, Texas, in an effort to surpass previous flight milestones.

As the countdown hit zero, 32 of 33 Raptor engines on the Super Heavy booster lit, with the outlier being an engine on the outer ring. Despite the engine out, the booster still ascended with ease away from the launch mount and broke through the thick fog into clear blue skies with views streamed back to the ground from just above one of the grid fins.

As Starship climbed, everything continued to operate nominally all the way through the hot staging which saw Super Heavy Booster 11 shut down all but its 3 center Raptor engines as Starship 29 lit its 6 Raptor engines to pull away from the massive booster. As soon as Starship was clear, Booster 11 completed a flip and boostback burn to begin its trip for a planned soft touchdown in the Gulf of Mexico by relighting 10 Raptor engines.

Once the boostback burn was complete, the hot staging ring was ejected to reduce the overall mass of the booster to help it survive reentry and landing. Future Super Heavy boosters will feature a lighter hot staging ring that will not be ejected. As the booster made its way back, it re-orientated to vertical and began re-entry back through the atmosphere, and unlike the Falcon 9, it does not perform an entry burn.

At around 7 minutes and 15 seconds into flight, the Super Heavy booster lit 12 out of a planned 13 engines for its landing burn, followed shortly by quite a bit of debris flying by the onboard camera, but it did not affect anything critical as seconds later Booster 11 made a successful splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico before a slow planned tip over into the water.

As Booster 11 completed the first successful soft landing, Starship 29 fired its six Raptor engines, three sea level and three vacuum, with engine shutoff coming in at eight and a half minutes into flight. The starship then entered a long coast phase as it passed between the Florida Keys and Cuba and transited over the Atlantic Ocean, followed by Africa.

During IFT-3, live views were provided for a majority of this portion but due to an unknown issue, cameras didn’t come back until just before 37 minutes into the flight. Elon Musk posted on X that they had a data signal the entire time including live views from internal cameras.

45 minutes into the flight, the true test of Starship began as plasma started to build up, but this time, Starship was in the correct orientation, and the heatshield was facing the correct way to give the ship its best chance at survival.

As Starship descended, plasma build-up increased with callouts from mission control noting rising temperatures on the nose but all within acceptable limits. At just over 54 minutes into the flight, Starship made it further than the third flight test and into unknown territory.

57 minutes into the flight, peak heating had passed but tiles were starting to fall away from the forward flap followed by melting of the lower portion, despite this damage, Starship held strong and in the correct orientation as it descended.

Starship continued its descent and, with significant damage, still made it through to its own landing burn and performed its flip to a vertical orientation and a soft touchdown in the Indian Ocean west of Australia.

Even with the damage inflicted on Starship, it completed all test objectives while providing SpaceX with incredibly valuable data that will be used to make the ship stronger on future test flights. The Starlink antenna also survived the entire flight which ensured this data made it back to mission control.

With this successful mission complete, SpaceX could launch the 5th flight by mid to late July and possibly even attempt a catch of the Super Heavy booster according to Elon Musk.

SpaceX is targeting June 5th for the fourth flight test of its massive Starship rocket, pending approval from the Federal Aviation Administration.

The company completed a full wet dress rehearsal last week before destacking Starship from the Super Heavy booster to complete final preparations ahead of launch.

SpaceX then stacked the two rockets together this weekend and could possibly perform another fueling test ahead of the June 5th launch attempt while they await approval from the FAA.

The fourth flight test will see Starship 29, along with Super Heavy Booster 11, attempt to make it further than their predecessors. SpaceX indicated that this flight will follow the same flight path as the third test but will not be performing an engine re-light in space, fuel transfer, or payload bay door operations.

The goal for this flight is for both vehicles to survive their respective re-entry through the atmosphere, a soft landing in the ocean for Super Heavy, and a controlled re-entry for Starship.

To help Super Heavy survive its trip back to Earth, SpaceX will jettison the hot staging ring from the top of the booster and has made several hardware and software changes to prevent the same issues that occurred on the third flight test, including a blocked filter that prevented Raptor engines from lighting during the landing burn.

On the Starship side, SpaceX also made several changes, including adding more thrusters to help control the Starship’s attitude while in its coast phase and prevent blockage, which caused the uncontrolled re-entry on the third flight test.

SpaceX has stacked Starship 29 on top of Super Heavy Booster 11 ahead of the fourth Integrated Flight test, which could happen within the next three to five weeks.

Over the next few days, SpaceX will begin various tests of the rocket, including a full Wet Dress Rehearsal, during which Starship will be fully fueled. The company will also test all of the ground systems to ensure there is less of a chance of issues popping up on the day of a launch attempt.

SpaceX is still awaiting its launch license from the Federal Aviation Administration, but it seems that this time around, they will receive it within the next 3 to 5 weeks, which is the time Elon Musk estimated the launch would take place.

Starship 29 has already completed two static fires, while Super Heavy Booster 11 has completed one static fire of its 33 Raptor engines. SpaceX could conduct a spin prime or even a static fire test while the two are stacked together. Once these tests are completed, SpaceX will likely de-stack the two rockets and possibly move them back to the production site for final preparations, including finishing work on Starship 29’s heatshield tiles.

SpaceX isn’t focusing solely on the 4th flight as they recently conducted a static fire of Starship 30 at suborbital pad B. Ship 30 is likely to fly the 5th flight test along with Super Heavy Booster 12, which has completed 2 cryogenic tests.

The company also recently attempted a cryogenic test of Starship 31, but in a video captured by NSF and posted on X, it appears an electrical fire broke out during the detanking process.

What About It’s John Cargile later captured a detailed picture of the damage, which showed the damage to the raceway, which is full of electrical wires that run up and down the ship.

It is unknown how serious the damage was and if the Ship can be salvaged but it would be far from the first time that SpaceX has encountered issues like this and still made repairs and flown the rocket later on.

SpaceX is moving rapidly with the Starship program. They have now conducted the first static fire of the Starship, which will be flying the fifth mission.

Firing all 6 Raptor engines, Starship 30 began its test campaign. The company is waiting for approval from the Federal Aviation Administration to conduct the fourth flight of Starship, potentially in a month or so.

The 6 engines, 3 sea-level Raptors, and 3 vacuum Raptors roared to life for ~4 seconds before shutting down. This could be the last Starship static fire to occur at the launch site after SpaceX added a new flame trench and mobile test stand at its Massey’s test site down the road from the production site.

If Flight 4 goes according to plan, Starship 30, paired with Super Heavy Booster 12 could fly within a month if given a fast approval by the FAA and the launch site is ready. Booster 12 has already undergone 2 cryo-proof tests.

Elsewhere around Starbase, SpaceX is continuing to test the launch mount, most recently testing the speed of the chopstick arms that will eventually be used to catch the Super Heavy Booster. The most recent test was the fastest they have closed yet, but it does seem like they will make further improvements to ensure a safe catch.

SpaceX has also conducted 2 cryo-proof tests on Super Heavy Booster 13, adding yet another vehicle waiting its turn to take to the skies.

As the month progresses, we should see Super Heavy Booster 11 and Starship 29 move back to the launch site to be stacked and undergo a wet dress rehearsal. If that goes smoothly, SpaceX will only be waiting for the launch approval from the FAA.

SpaceX lit all 33 Raptor engines on Booster 11 ahead of the fourth test flight, which could come as early as next month.

The company recently completed testing on Ship 29 with two successful static fires, moved it back to the production site to complete the last remaining tasks before launch, and moved right into the next tests with the Super Heavy booster.

After rolling down Highway 4 from the production site to the launch site, the chopsticks lifted Booster 11 onto the launch mount, and in just over a day, SpaceX began the final steps needed before the fourth flight.

As the countdown hit the final seconds, the FireX system began dispersing any gases around the engines, followed by the water suppression system flooding the pad to protect it from the power of all 33 Raptor engines, which lit in a fury and ran for around 7 to 8 seconds before shutting down.

In the usual tradition, SpaceX released a drone video just hours after the test, showcasing the power of the vehicle; even with the engines at roughly 50 percent power, shockwaves are seen traveling through the exhaust plume as the engines fire.

SpaceX will now perform a deep-dive data review and determine whether to perform another static fire or move the booster back to the production site for final preparations and the 4th flight test, which could come as soon as next month.

Back at the production site, Ship 29 is undergoing its last checkouts, including replacing the heatshield tiles on the spacecraft’s nose, before it is moved back to the launch site and stacked on top of Booster 11 for a final wet dress rehearsal before launch.

If the data comes back good and the final preparations aren’t extensive, the last hurdle will once again be approval from the Federal Aviation Administration, however, officials have said they do not expect the process to take long following the 3rd flight which they considered a success.

Ship 29 roared to life once again yesterday afternoon at Starbase, moving another step forward to the fourth flight test for SpaceX.

SpaceX lit a single Raptor engine at 1:30 pm CT, this time fueling the powerful rocket motor using the header tank located near the top of the spacecraft.

This follows a similar path SpaceX took with Ship 28. When the company completed that test, they said it was to simulate the de-orbit burn of the spacecraft even though with current test flight trajectories, the rocket is sub-orbital.

Now that this test is complete, SpaceX will move Ship 29 back to the production site to finish its final preparations ahead of flight in roughly a couple of months. During the last 2 static fires, the ship lost just a few heat shield tiles that will be replaced. The tile system as a whole performed better than previous ships and only a handful of tiles were lost. The SpaceX team will also perform checkouts of the entire system, including the 6 Raptor engines.

With the launch site free, the company will now move Booster 11 from the production site to the orbital launch mount and begin the prelaunch test campaign, which would culminate in at least one static fire of all 33 Raptor engines.

Booster 11’s campaign will follow roughly the same path as Ship 29. SpaceX will likely load the booster with fuel and perform a spin prime test, which involves rapidly flowing super-chilled liquid oxygen through the engines to simulate ignition, and then after verifying the data from the test is good, they will perform the static fire test.

When the massive boosters conduct their static fire tests, they keep the engines at around 50 percent power so as not to cause any unnecessary damage to the launch pad, even though SpaceX has now completed 2 launches with all 33 engines ramping up to full power prior to lift-off without any damage thanks to the powerful water suppression system that was installed following the first integrated flight test.

Once the static fire test campaign is complete, SpaceX will move Booster 11 back to the production site for final checkouts. Then, both the booster and ship will be moved to the launch site to be stacked for a wet dress rehearsal and eventual launch, which could come as soon as May.

SpaceX continues to progress towards the fourth flight of Starship following a successful static fire of Ship 29.

Ship 29 lit all 6 Raptor engines for around four seconds on sub-orbital pad B at Starbase, sending up a massive cloud of dust, and once the dust cleared, Ship 29 was still standing, just missing a few heat shield tiles.

SpaceX may conduct another static fire test similar to what they did with Ship 28 by lighting one Raptor engine to simulate a de-orbit burn. If that goes well, the next major step for Ship 29 will be stacking on top of Booster 11 for a Wet Dress Rehearsal closer to the 4th test flight.

Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX’s President and COO, recently said they are still reviewing all of the data received from the 3rd test flight while putting together a mishap report for the Federal Aviation Administration.

Kevin Coleman of the FAA said they did not expect anything major to pop up during the investigation that could delay the 4th test flight, which could occur as soon as May. Coleman indicated they considered the test flight a success, with no critical safety systems compromised.

Back at the Starbase production site, Booster 4 was cut in half to be scrapped. Booster 4 was first rolled to the launch site in March 2021 and was predicted to be the first to fly, but with the rapid changes SpaceX made, the booster was deemed obsolete.

Besides Booster 11, which is set to fly the 4th test flight, there are at least 6 other known boosters in various stages of production, and for the Starships, there are 8 Starships either built or in progress.

SpaceX has revealed some new information regarding the third test flight of its massive Starship rocket.

The flight, which took place from Starbase, Texas, yesterday morning at 8:25 am CT, capitalized on previous test flights and accomplished a host of new objectives.

All 33 Raptor engines lit in a staggered sequence, and once throttled up, the world’s biggest rocket took flight for the third time.

As Starship climbed into the South Texas skies, the 33 engines continued to operate nominally until the hot stage separation, in which 30 of Super Heavy’s engines shut down as Starship lit its 3 sea-level and 3 vacuum Raptor engines and continued to space.

For the first time, the Super Heavy first stage, Booster 10, successfully performed a boost back burn and aimed for a splashdown just East of the launch pad in the Gulf of Mexico. According to the data displayed on the webcast, the booster reached a peak speed of 5750 km/h and an altitude of 106 km.

Unlike the Falcon 9, the Super Heavy is so big it does not need to do an entry burn however in one of the last bits of data available on the webcast, it showed the booster attempted to begin its landing burn around 1 km in altitude with only 3 engines lighting and 2 shutting off almost immediately after.

SpaceX has since confirmed that Booster 10 experienced a rapid unscheduled disassembly just 462 meters above the water’s surface, and it is likely that what remained of the booster hit the water at nearly the speed of sound.

While Booster 10 was meeting its fate in the Gulf of Mexico following a great performance, Ship 28 continued to burn all 6 of its Raptor engines and completed its first full-duration burn, inserting itself into its proper sub-orbital trajectory.

Ship 28 then began its coast phase and started a series of tests. The payload bay door, aka pez door, designed to eventually eject the full-size Starlink satellites, was first commanded to open 12 minutes into the flight. SpaceX has yet to confirm whether it managed to fully open/close the door. At 30:18 into the mission, the door appears to have dislodged into the payload bay, and we no longer got any live views inside the ship.

The next task was to re-light the first-ever Raptor engine in space, but due to the vehicle’s roll rates, SpaceX decided to postpone this until a future flight.

Ship 28 then began atmospheric entry, but the ship seemed to be partially out of control with the spin and eventually began to build up plasma. The heat shield was only half exposed, and the rest was bare stainless steel, taking the brunt of the forces of re-entry.

Thanks to Starlink terminals on board, SpaceX was able to provide incredible live views from a camera located on one of Starship’s flaps. The plasma began as a faint pink glow before rapidly growing and enveloping the vehicle while still maintaining a good data connection which has never before been possible.

Overall, SpaceX made many great advancements on this third test flight and will look to complete all of these on the fourth test flight, including a smooth splashdown of the Super Heavy booster and successful re-entry through the atmosphere for Starship.

SpaceX was successful in its third test flight of the largest rocket ever as Starship took to the skies at 8:25 am CT from Starbase, Texas.

The massive rocket made it further than ever during its third flight, including successful stage separation and atmospheric re-entry.

The 33 Raptor engines powered Booster 10 with Ship 28 stacked on top all the way through its portion of the flight, never losing one engine. Two minutes and 50 seconds into the flight, Booster 10 and Ship 28 went through the hot staging maneuver flawlessly.

Booster 10 then relit some of its engines to perform the boost backburn toward a landing area just East of the launch pad in the Gulf of Mexico. The booster made it all the way through the burn and re-oriented itself to a vertical position as it plunged through the atmosphere and used its giant grid fins to help stabilize the vehicle.

During the final moments of the re-entry, the forces on the vehicle became too much, and around the 2 km mark, the booster engine attempted to light for the landing burn, but it appears a few failed, and the booster was lost shortly after.

While Booster 10 was plunging back through the atmosphere, Ship 28 continued to fly perfectly, burning all 6 Raptor engines to reach orbital velocity. The ships’ engines shut down just over eight and a half minutes into flight and were officially in space, coasting between the Florida Keys and Cuba on its way to its planned re-entry over the Indian Ocean.

During the coast phase, SpaceX completed multiple in-flight tests, such as opening and closing the payload bay, or the pez door, as they put it. Following that, the rocket then performed a fuel transfer demonstration, moving fuel from the header tanks into the main tanks. This was the first time they had done this while in orbit, but according to Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX’s president and COO, they are waiting to officially confirm this.

SpaceX had intended to perform a re-light of a Raptor engine while in space, however, they elected to skip that and attempt this during a future mission.

Ship 28 then began atmospheric entry 46 minutes into the mission. Thanks to the Starlink connection, SpaceX was able to provide amazing views of the plasma build-up around the ship, something that is generally never seen as the plasma blocks the signal on smaller vehicles.

Just over 49 minutes into the flight, during peak heating, the Starship data connection was lost with both Starlink and TDRS (Tracking and Data Relay satellites), the former being used for all vehicles in space, including the Crew Dragon capsule.

The on-screen telemetry stopped at a speed of 25,707 km/h at a height of 65 km. SpaceX said that with both signals dropping at the same time, it is likely the ship broke up during re-entry and did not make the planned intact splashdown.

While neither Booster 10 nor Ship 28 made it 100% to their planned splashdown, this third test flight was a massive win for SpaceX, and the company will look to complete the fourth flight test within a couple of months.
