On Sunday, X user BLKMDL3 stopped by the Hollywood Tesla Diner location and shared photos of the site, noting that Superchargers are now lit up, parking lots are fully paved, and construction generally appears to be nearing completion. The news comes after Tesla has been building out the site for around 18 months, which many have pointed out is longer than some of the company’s latest production facilities have taken.

Tesla has yet to disclose when it plans to open the Supercharger location, though it appears to be getting closer than ever, at least as far as construction is concerned. The company also included some code related to integration with the diner in its latest version of the Tesla mobile app in January, along with posting its first job listings for the site in August.

The user also notes that the adjacent parking lot is being built out to include additional Supercharger stalls, with the actual lots for the diner including around 28 to 32 stalls total, consistent with permits for the project. Next door, the user says the company is building roughly an additional 50 or so stalls, though these aren’t likely to be open when the diner initially opens.

The site is located at 7001 West Santa Monica Boulevard, and according to Elon Musk’s original concepts for the Supercharger discussed on what was then Twitter in 2018, the unique charger is set to include a 1950s-style diner with rock and roll and waiters on roller skates, in addition to drive-in theater screens playing scenes from the best movies in history.

Tesla gained a series of construction permits for the project throughout 2023, before officially beginning construction in September 2023. You can see photos from the site below, taken just weeks after groundbreaking, as well as in January and April of last year.

X user AlSet51241438 shared progress update videos and photos from the Tesla Diner site on Sunday, showing three solar canopies and a nearly completed front parking lot area. Tesla is still working on getting the solar canopies installed and getting those areas of the parking lot paved, while also installing additional V4 stalls in that area that the user says are nearly completed.

At this time, Tesla has yet to announce any kind of opening date for the diner and Supercharger. However, references to the Supercharger Diner were spotted in internal code for a software update in January, suggesting that Tesla was getting closer to integrating the menu with the company’s vehicles.

The company also began hiring for the diner location in August, posting a role for a “Tesla Diner Experience Specialist,” focused on managing customer experience from content and audio-visual tools to menu reviews and collaborating with design teams.

Tesla initially began construction on the diner and Supercharger location in September 2023, after receiving multiple construction approvals throughout 2022 and 2023. The idea for the Tesla Diner initially came about from a conversation with CEO Elon Musk in 2018, and the company also registered a trademark for its logo to cover restaurant services in 2021.

In the original discussion about the project, Musk said he wanted it to be “an old school drive-in, roller skates & rock restaurant” at a new LA Supercharger location. Although the current iteration includes two screens, Musk back then added that the site would include “an outdoor screen that plays a highlight reel of the best scenes in movie history,” along with a food menu that appears “as soon as you put the car into park.”

The Tesla Drive-In Supercharger will feature a diner with food and drinks, and CEO Elon Musk has said that movie clips will play on massive projector screens.

It will be located on Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles, and the project has been underway for a few years now. However, we are nearing the launch of the unique Supercharger as building the structure continues and Tesla continues to submit permits for HVAC, plumbing, and other necessary functions.

The biggest indication that the Supercharger Diner is nearing is the fact that Tesla included some cool updates for it in its most recent app update.

Tesla included a user interface for the diner in the 4.41.0 app update, and also implemented an icon the company will use for the diner as well:

There is also plenty of coding in the app that describes things like ‘DinerHomeScreen,’ ‘profile_settings_diner_description,’ and ‘View menu & amenities,’ so there are definitely things moving forward.

While the app updates seem to indicate that things are moving in the right direction for the Tesla Diner, there is still no firm confirmation on plans to open the Supercharger in terms of a date.

Documents seen by Teslarati have shown that Tesla has not filed any sort of construction permit at the site since October. We are also unclear if the wildfires in Los Angeles are going to derail or delay any projects at the site.

In a video update shared by drone observer and YouTube channel 247Tesla over the weekend, you can see the frame for the screen on the Northern side of the lot now covered with a 45-foot LED display, as the site begins to take shape on the drive-in side of things. The site is eventually expected to feature clips from the best movies in history, according to Elon Musk’s original musings about the project back in 2018.

The screens, one of which still needs the final LED display, will run from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., while the diner and charging stations will be open 24 hours a day, according 247Tesla. The screens will also reportedly be visible from both the diner building and the Supercharging stations.

In addition to the first LED screen being installed, the site is getting more conduit work, while the main door to the diner building has been fully completed following the initial placement of the glass panels around two weeks ago.

Tesla put up the frame for the first screen on the Northern side of the lot (the one that now features an LED display) back in March, following up with the second frame in July due to a power line blocking the whole Western side of the parking area.

Located at 7001 Santa Monica Blvd., the site was originally approved for as many as 32 charging posts, and as can be seen now, at least some of them going in are Tesla’s next-gen V4 Superchargers. It’s also expected to feature a 1950s-style diner with waiters on roller skates, rock and roll, and the multi-level seating that’s now taking shape.

Tesla first broke ground on the Tesla Diner site last September, with the first structures for the restaurant building going up in November. Along with the construction progress the company has made, the company has also started hiring for the Tesla Diner, so we may even see the unique charging project operational by the end of the year.

This week, YouTube channel 247Tesla shared a new drone video of the Los Angeles Tesla diner construction site, including new details such as the installation of a front door, a new trench in one of the lots, and the full installation of a number of Supercharger stalls.

The main door being installed is a round, singular piece of glass featuring a small hole in the middle. The video’s host says the hole will be “big enough for a Texas-size belt buckle,” though it’s not yet clear exactly what will go in the middle.

In addition, the site is featuring a massive new trench that was dug out in the auxiliary lot, though it’s not clear as of yet what it will be used for. Lastly, the video shows that many of the initial Supercharger stalls have been completed, and have been covered with cardboard and a layer of green wrapping materials since completion.

Currently, the site includes frames for the two projector screens, though they haven’t yet been covered in a material to catch the light of the projectors. Tesla built the first frame for one of the screens in March, though the company had to wait until July to construct the second frame due to power lines that needed to be removed.

In drone footage shared by 247Tesla on Tuesday, we can see that the crews have poured concrete across around half of the overall customer parking lot area, and some of the V4 Supercharger hardware we saw going in last week now feature the actual charging posts. The video’s host also points out that the wall on the west side of the lot, which previously included a bunch of graffiti, has now been covered up with solid gray paint.

The site also shows several cars in the attached parking lot, though not many workers can be seen working on the exterior, suggesting that there may be a lot going into the interior space at this time. Workers have also closed off one lane on Santa Monica Boulevard, as crews work to update the road’s sightline by replacing the wooden telephone poles.

Interestingly, while the diner and Supercharger site likely won’t be completed for another couple of months, some have spotted Tesla seemingly testing Full Self-Driving (FSD) around the diner and other California locations ahead of the company’s Thursday robotaxi unveiling event. One apparent prototype was also seen testing outside of the Warner Brothers studio in Burbank at which the event will be hosted.

In any case, Tesla has also begun hiring for its Supercharger, diner and drive-in, and it posted a job listing for a “Tesla Diner Experience Specialist” in August that remains up on its careers page today. It’s unclear at this time when Tesla plans to open the unique diner location, though if construction progress and hiring are any indication (they are), we’ll likely get some news on this in the coming months.

In a post on Saturday, X user AL Set posted photos of the new V4 Supercharger posts wrapped in cardboard as they’re being installed onto the concrete curbs. The diner building is also coming together quite nicely as it starts to look like an establishment where electric vehicle (EV) owners will soon be able to charge, eat, and relax in front of one of two movie screens.

Original plans for the site show around 25 charging stalls, though the series of permit approvals we reported on last year allows the company to install as many as 32 posts. It’s not clear at this point how many stalls the site will end up with, but the first stalls being V4 will definitely be met with appreciation by some who have been speculating about this for several months now.

Initial construction on the Tesla Diner, located at 7001 Santa Monica Blvd. in West Hollywood, began late last September, and the initial structures for the restaurant building had gone up by early November. Many of the ideas for the Tesla diner site came from Elon Musk in 2018 musings on what was then Twitter, primarily including the concept of an “old school drive-in, roller skates & rock restaurant.”

Musk also talked about the idea of having a menu pop up in Tesla vehicles as soon as they start charging, effectively streamlining the process of ordering food.

In addition to including a 1950s-themed diner restaurant, the site is expected to include two drive-in movie theater screens, the frames of which are now built, and on which patrons will be able to watch clips from the best movies in history while charging their vehicles and eating. Construction crews initially built the frame for the first movie screen in March, the second frame was built at the end of July after some power lines that had been blocking construction had finally come down.

In a pair of videos shared on Monday and Tuesday, YouTube channel 247Tesla shows drone footage of the West Hollywood Tesla Diner and Supercharger site showing some of the closest daytime shots of recent progress. Along with the site generally starting to look like a diner, crews were seen installing glass for counter-height windows on the first floor, as well as preparations for weatherproofing and the full installation of the second movie screen.

The video also shows concrete drying over the high-voltage lines that will supply the Supercharger lines, and a ton of stock for more conduit to be placed.

The latest updates follow a video from the channel over the weekend taking a few looks at the building’s Cybertruck-like polished steel exterior. In any case, construction of the Tesla Diner has come a long way since crews first broke ground on the site last September.

Located at 7001 Santa Monica Blvd. in Los Angeles, the diner is expected to be a 1950s-style restaurant with rock and roll music playing and waiters on roller skates, according to original ideas for the site posted on what was then called Twitter by Tesla CEO Elon Musk. The musings also included plans to feature the two movie screens, as can be seen in the videos, with highlight reels of some of the best movie scenes in history.

In a video shared by YouTube channel 247Tesla over the weekend, you can see that polished steel panels now line the walls of the Los Angeles Tesla diner building, giving the building a slightly different look than those in renders that have been popularized.

While it’s a little different than the white, red, and vaguely pink-looking glow in the popular graphics created by X user HowardModels, it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise to see Tesla embracing the steel look, given the release of the stainless steel Cybertruck last year.

The video also highlights the addition of weather coating on the frame for the first movie screen, as can be seen on the north side of the lot. Railing for interior stairs has also been delivered to the site, and crews are moving lots of Earth around, as the video also points out. The site’s sidewalks and curbs have also been laid, and more progress has been made on the auxiliary lot.

Over the last several months, Tesla has been building out a long-anticipated Supercharger, diner, and drive-in movie theater in Los Angeles, and after months of waiting for the second movie theater screen to go up, it appears it’s finally been built.

Last week, crews began clearing power lines that were blocking the construction of the second screen’s frame. On Monday, Andy of 247Tesla shared a photo with Teslarati showing the frame for the second screen fully constructed and in place.

Crews have been getting closer to building the Tesla diner’s second screen over the last several weeks, with the site last month surpassing nine months since construction began. Tesla first broke ground on the unique Supercharger and diner site in September, and while the first movie screen frame went up in March, work has been focused on the exterior and interior work on the restaurant building, as well as grading in the parking lot.

The idea for the Tesla diner came about in 2018, when CEO Elon Musk discussed the concept on Twitter with some of his followers. He noted that he was hoping to create an old school drive-in movie theater and Supercharger location, featuring a restaurant with waiters on roller skates and rock and roll music playing. In addition, Musk said that the Tesla diner would feature movie screens playing some of the best scenes from movie history.

As can be seen in the building coming together today, the diner building features multi-level seating on which attendees can sit and eat and watch movie clips on the screens while they wait for their electric vehicles (EVs) to charge.
