Tesla has officially launched a range-limited version of Actually Smart Summon in markets in Europe and the Middle East, as announced by the company this week. Some have expressed criticism for the limited version and for the related regulations, though the move could also represent a crucial step in Tesla’s aims to launch its Supervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) in the markets.

The company announced the news on in a post on its Europe and Middle East account on X on Thursday, after the company initially launched the highly-anticipated feature in the U.S. in September. For now, users must be within a 6-meter (~20 feet) range of the vehicle to use the feature, and some have expressed frustration with the limitation.

By comparison, Tesla’s Actually Smart Summon works within approximately 213 feet (~65 meters) in the U.S., which left many wondering why there was such a stark difference. As it turns out, there is a United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) regulation that requires operators to remain within 6 meters of their vehicle when operating them autonomously, hence the regulation.

In UNECE Regulation No. 79 Revision 5, it says that such a system’s “maximum RCP operating range shall not exceed 6 m,” explaining the limitation. You can see the full UNECE regulation here, or check out more details from Tesla about Actually Smart Summon here in its U.S. owner’s manual.

Actually Smart Summon is also not available in Canada just yet, though the country is often the first to follow the U.S. regarding new Tesla features.

The news also comes as Tesla has been aiming to launch FSD Supervised in Europe, China, and other markets, and some have suggested that Actually Smart Summon’s launch in the former region could be a precursor to FSD. Tesla launched Actually Smart Summon in September as a part of an FSD Supervised update, though the two systems technically have separate coding, as Elon Musk explained in July.

Tesla seems to have taken important steps to launch FSD Supervised in Europe throughout much of this year, along with similarly important steps in China. However, last month, a former executive from the company pointed out that the United Nations (UN) had chosen to delay a regulation that could slow down the rollout of FSD in Europe.

Tesla has been deploying its Actually Smart Summon (ASS) software over the past few weeks, and while it has been rolling out somewhat widely, the company’s Autopilot Director recently provided an update as to when owners of legacy Model S and Model X vehicles can expect to see the software.

The highly-anticipated ASS feature lets owners remotely summon their vehicles from a parking spot, and while some were concerned it would only be going out to Teslas with Hardware 4 (HW4), the software quickly began rolling out the HW3-equipped vehicles. Since then, however, some legacy Model S and X owners have been asking when or if Autopark or ASS would be going out to their vehicles, and they finally got an answer on Monday.

In a response on X, Tesla Autopilot Director Ashok Elluswamy said that the ASS feature will go out to legacy Model S and X vehicles in the fourth quarter, which will officially begin on Tuesday. While he didn’t comment on exactly when the groups would receive the feature during the quarter, at least owners can expect to receive the software by the end of this year.

Tesla gives update for early FSD adopters with legacy Model S, Model X vehicles

In addition to asking about ASS, the original post from longtime legacy Model S and X advocate Anthony Spina also requested details on Autopark, though Elluswamy didn’t say anything beyond sharing the timeline for ASS rollout to legacy Model S and X owners.

Legacy Model S and X vehicles came with the pre-HW3 Intel-based media control units (MCUs) computers, first dubbed MCU1, and later dubbed MCU2 and offered as an upgrade retrofit for MCU1-equipped vehicles. Tesla has since upgraded to a Ryzen processor with the so-called HW3 and HW4 in its newer cars.

Owners with the pre-refresh models also wondered when they could expect to get Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised v12, though Tesla began rolling the software out to these vehicles earlier this year.

Tesla is already improving Actually Smart Summon (ASS)

With the release of Tesla’s Actually Smart Summon (ASS), the first videos and examples of the feature are being shown.

Tesla released Actually Smart Summon last night, bringing the feature back after the company transitioned to a Vision-only approach several years ago. The original release, known as Smart Summon, is relatively identical to the new Actually Smart Summon. However, there are some improvements.

We are now seeing owners take ASS for a spin as the vehicles are operating with the new form of Summon.

Tesla finally launches Actually Smart Summon and Dumb Summon

One owner showed the improved accuracy of the navigation of a vehicle on Summon as a Model Y made it through a roundabout and picked him up on the far side:

It seems to navigate the roundabout with plenty of confidence, and although slow and cautious, there is something to be said about the vehicle doing what it is with no true hiccups along the way.

The next true test will be to see Summon in a parking lot that has some foot traffic, as the reactions of what people will see as a “driverless car” would be priceless in their own right.

Tesla has finally launched Actually Smart Summon (ASS) after years of delays. It has also rolled out another feature called Dumb Summon.

Released in the most recent Software Update for Teslas, Actually Smart Summon will allow owners to literally summon their vehicle from a parking spot to a particular location nearby.

The best example of its ideal usage would be to pick you up from the front of the grocery store instead of hauling a cart full of groceries throughout the parking lot.

Instead, your car will come to your location, configured by the Tesla App.

Dumb Summon will let you move the vehicle forward or backward, adjusting the final location of the vehicle.

The release notes state:

“Buckle up for the ride of your life, except, surprise! You’re not in the car. ASS (Actually Smart Summon) allows your vehicle to come to you, or head to a spot that you choose, all on its own. It’s like magic but with more tech and less hand-waving.

Additionally, Dumb Summon allows you to move your Tesla forward or back with simple controls directly in your Mobile App.

To use, open your Tesla app, hit the Summon tab, and get a live feed from your car’s cameras to guide your supervision.

    • COME TO ME: Press and hold to have your Tesla come to you.
    • GO TO TARGET: Set where you want your Tesla to go, then press and hold to send it on its merry way.

You can halt your journey anytime by just letting go of the button. See your Owner’s Manual for additional details.

ASS and Dumb Summon should only be used in parking lots or driveways. Keep an eye on your car and its surroundings at all times. Stay vigilant, especially around the fast and the furious (people, bikes, and other cars). You are still responsible for your vehicle, so watch as it drives and stop it if necessary.

Note: ASS requires the Tesla mobile app version 4.36.6 or later.”

As of now, ASS is only available to those who have vehicles equipped with Hardware 4, and Tesla nor its CEO Elon Musk have confirmed whether the feature will be available on Hardware 3 vehicles.

It should be available on Hardware 3 vehicles in the coming weeks, just as the most recent builds of the Full Self-Driving suite also made their way to those vehicles, just in a delayed fashion compared to Hardware 4.
