Kinda like the way a gas car stops when the level of gas in the tank hits zero?

An emergency “get-you-home” override might damage the battery. Li-Ion batteries must not be discharged to zero, or overcharged. Either the charger or the device has a chip that controls charge rate, fully charged point, and the minimum charge level. Since a Tesla S 85kW battery is $44,000, a tow by your auto club would be preferable to a damaged battery that is not covered by warranty.
